The English Language Program had just completed the 8th year teaching a 2 week intensive English course in Antigua, Guatemala to Maya university students. This photography project was sponsored by a local church in Hanover, NH which funded the purchase of digital cameras. Students went out in small groups to take photos of the city, each other; architectural sites etc. and then discussed these photographs in English class.

What War? Testimonies of Maya Survivors

Laurie Levinger went to Guatemala in 2004 with a volunteer group to teach English to Maya university students. The students were all participants in a scholarship program sponsored by the Maya Educational Foundation. Within the first days, one of the students introduced himself as a “survivor of the Guatemala civil war”. In that moment Laurie realized that she had more to learn than to teach, and so she returned to Guatemala to ask questions and to listen. During several trips to Guatemala she collected testimonies from university students, their families, and other survivors.

These testimonies have been published in the book What War? Testimonies of Maya Survivors Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2011) and Cual Guerra? Testimonios de Sobrevivientes Mayas (Editorial Cholsamaj, 2008).Staughton Lynd, author, historian, and peace activist has said: “A middle-aged American stranger who knew little Spanish came to teach English and, somehow, encouraged young Mayan university students to share their pain-filled memories with her and with each other. This book records that extraordinary achievement.”
